WAIMATE

FUNCTION AT HIGH SCHOOL MR AND MRS F. DRAYTON HONOURED A pleasant function took place at the Waimate High School recently, when members of the staff gathered to make presentations to Mr and Mrs F. Drayton on the occasion of their relinquishing the positions of caretakers, which they had held since the inception of the school. In making the presentations, the Rector, Mr M. Leadbetter,. said that Mr and Mrs Drayton had identified themselves so closely with the general interests of the school that they had come to be looked upon as part of the school itself. The very fine appearance of the school, both inside and out. was a tribute to the efficient and conscientious manner in which they had carried out their duties, and their services to the school could not be assessed in monetary terms. On behalf of the staff Mr Leadbetter wished Mr and Mrs Drayton every happiness in the years to come. He then presented Mr Drayton with a tobacco pouch and Mrs Drayton with ornamental crockery. Replying, Mr Drayton said that it was a wrench for Mrs Drayton and himself to sever their relations with the school. He expressed appreciation of the unfailing courtesy which had always been extended to them by members of the staff and by the pupils, and wished the school every success in the future. CRICKET OLD BOYS’ CLUB The annual meeting of the Old Boys’ Cricket Club was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Wednesday evening. Mi - J. H. McCormick presided. The annual report stated that a very successful season was experienced by the club in competitions, and only one match was lost. The club is in a fairly good financial position, and we desire to thank all who assisted the club. The wicket at Manchester Park would now require a good deal of attention, and it was suggested that the club give careful condiseration this year to the purchase of matting. There was little material required this season, and there appears to be every prospect of a good season before the club. It was wjth regret that they had to record the departure of Mr W. Stevens, who, as a player and member of the committee, was a great help. They extended the best wishes of the club to him. They again drew the attention of members to the necessity of attend-

I ing practice, as only by this could they I hope to improve the standard of play. They desired to thank the Waimate Borough Council for the assistance they have given at Manchester Park. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The president stated that the club had had a very successful season and the financial position was satisfactory. He thanked the numbers for their assistance and help given him during the season.

It was decided that a letter of appreciation be forwarded to Mr D. Pelvin for the assistance he had given the club in preparing the wicket last season.
