WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

SOUTH CANTERBURY FEDERATION At the meeting of the executive of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes the following members were present: Mesdames L. E. Williams (president) in the chair, P. W. Hislop, G. A. M. Macdonald, A. B. Mackenzie, S. C. Chisnall, J. McLeod, P. Grant, R. W. Irving, M. B. Reid,

Misses A. T. Williams. G. A, Brown and E. L. Davies. Apologies were received from Mesdames A. G. Brown, A. Guild, W. E. Mills and Misses Ferguson and Begg. An invitation was received from the Women’s Division of the Fanners’ Union for a young member of each Institute to attend the Education week in Timaru at the end of September. The following remit was carried: “The South Canterbury Executive wish to bring to the notice of Women’s Ins' tutes the recommendation that when funds are being raised for outside objects, a certain proportion should be r"‘"’ned for a special fund for emergency uses.” Arrangements were made for the half-yearily meeting to be held in Timaru at the end of November. The speaker will be Mrs Watts M.A., 0.8. E., the founder of the Institute movement who will spend three months in New Zealand, visiting Federations by invitation of the Dominion Executive. The Government has granted free travel on the railways during the visitor's stay in the Dominion.

The folk-dancing festival will take place on October 17 at Ashbury Park. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation from the executive to Mr and Mrs W. E. Cook for their services. The report on the Women's Institute Depot was given by Mrs R. W. Irving. Mention was made on the satisfactory state of the sales, the turnover being £2OO in excess of last year’s. Miss Begg was thanked for her work at the Depot, and Miss G. A. Brown was selected ’o er press the thanks of the executive to the Depot Committee for their work. It was decided to thank the Dominion Executive for the Robert Young Cup which was awarded to the South Canterbury Federation for its hospitality Scheme. The cup, a handsome rose bowl, was handed over to Mrs A. H, Gillingham the promoter and organiser of the scheme, who’ was pres- I ent by invitation. Mrs Gillingham then gav" her report on the continued success of the circle. Miss G. A. Brown reported that the trees planted by the Institutes on ’he Seadown highway were doing well, and that it was intended shortly to further the scheme by planting more trees. Letters of congratulation are to be sent to Mrs W. Deans on her election as _ Dominion president, and to Miss Jerome Spencer on receiving the first honours badge. An appreciation cf her able conduct of the conference is to be sent to Miss Kane. ARUNDEL There was a fair attendance at the September meeting of the Arundel Women’s Institute held in the Howard Fall on Tuesday alternoon. Mrs Woodi: g presided. Apologies were received from Mrs McMaster and Misses E. McC ~h and E. Edwards. It was decided to give 10/- for expenses to Miss D. Edwards who will attend the Girls’ Educational Week ’n Timaru. Mrs Pithie proposed and Mrs Black seconded that as the Institute was in funds things that it was in need of be bought. Miss I. Reid gave an interesting demonstration of the making of hats "rom the ribbonwoo'’ tree. This was much enjoyed by all. Mrs Wooding proposed a vo’e of thanks to Miss Reid. Afternoon tea was served the hostesses being Mrs McDonald, Misses F. and J. McDonald, E. McCully and A Gou’d. Competitions resulted.—Orange cake: Miss H. Pratt 1, Mrs Pratt 2. Collection of primroses: Miss D. Johnston 1, Mrs Black 2. Drawing your neighbour: Miss J. Reid 1. Best bloom: Mrs J. Ambler 1.

BLUECLIFFS At the monthly meeting of the Bluecliffs Women's Institute, the president, Mrs Cocks presided over a large attendance of members. Two invitations were received from the Maungati Women’s Division to attend its birthday party. It was decided to join up with a link in England and also with one in Auckland. It was decided to send a member to the Women’s Division Educational Week in Timaru, Miss Kee being chosen to represent the Institute. The president, Mrs Cocks, gave a report of the group meeting which was held at St. Andrews.

Miss Mc.Manus gave a very interesting report of the proceedings at the conference in Dunedin. The monthly three minute talk was given by Mrs Moyle who chose “Archdeacon Chatterton" as her subject. The social competition was won by Miss Smith. A very interesting talk was given by Mrs Bockaert, St. Andrews, on the growing of chrysanthemums for exhibition purposes, for whicli she was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions resulted.—Bed Jacket: Miss Marshall 1, Miss J. Beattie 2, Mrs W. Beattie and Miss Ford equal 3. Kisses: Miss Kee 1, Mrs Cocks 2, Mrs Weeks 3. Premier bloom: Mrs Vincent and Mrs Collier equal 1. The hostesses were Mrs W. Beattie and Misses J. and R. Beattie.
