RAILWAY LOSS

REPORT ON VICTORIAN OPERATIONS United Press Association—Bv Electric Telegraph —Copyright (Received September 3, 12.5 a.m.) MELBOURNE, September 2. A deficit of £506,306, which is £60,144 less than the previous year, is shown in the annual report of the Railways Commissioners. A tremendous increase in the volume of traffic is revealed, which the Commissioners attribute to the policy of lower fares and more efficient services. Revenue increased by £270,758. Working expenses were £24,470 higher and interest charges £23,856 lower. Country passenger lines increased by £41,847 and goods line stock by £212,405. These figures do not indicate the true normal increase, as last year the Century traffic brought an increase of £130,000. Suburban passengers carried numbered 134,037,069, and country 5,425,676. The Commissioners estimate that the railways were deprived of goods revenue of £1,000,000 by road transport.
