LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION

CONFERENCE OF NEW ZEALAND BRANCH By leiegrapn—Riess Association WELLINGTON, September 2. In welcoming delegates to the annual conference of the New Zealand League of Nations Union, the president, Professor F. L. W. Wood, said that they were meeting in difficult times but the discussions together might help to clarify the position. The annual report stated that the Dominion Council noted with encouragement the present Government’s interest in international affairs and sympathy with the work of the League. It was for the Union to give sup>o”t to such a policy by organising public opinion in the League's favour and showing the New’ Zealand Government as well as Governments overseas that a policy favouring League principles would have the wholehearted support of the New Zealand public. A resolution was carried expressing appreciation of the Budget statement regarding the New Zealand Government’s support of the League Covenant for the maintenance of peace and a letter in these terms is to be sent to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance. A remit suggesting that an equity tribunal should be set up within the League and that an international police force should be formed to enforce the decisions of the tribunal n“ with a mixed reception. A number of delegates supported both suggestions, but several others held the view that the Union should concentrate i educating public opinion to gain support for the League rather than try to lay down rules for its reform. A committee was appointed to reframe the remit. The conference expressed warm appreciation and support of the Government’s League policy, commended the Government on having sent a good will mission to Samoa, and expressed a hope that every endeavour would be made to remove any legitimate grievances of the people of that territory.
