SEQUEL TO JOY RIDE AUCKLAND. September 2. A sequel to a trip from Auckland to Wellington in converted cars, by two young men and two girls, was heard in the Police Court this morning, when Thomas Samson Ewen Callendar (19), labourer, and Jack Story (21), butcher, pleaded guilty to two charges of converting cars, one valued at £175, the property of Alva Craig, Auckland, on August 16, and the other, valued at £245, belonging to A. and T. Burt, Limited, Wellington, on August 20. Both were fur the.- charged with the theft of registration plates at Wellington, while Story alone was charged with the theft in Auckland of £4/18/-, the property of Thomas Collins. They pleaded guilty. The police said Miss Craig’s car, stolen from Auckland, was found abandoned in Wellington, while the car taken from Wellington was found in the possession of accused when they returned to Auckland on August 22. When interviewed both accused made frank admissions, tney picked up two girls at Auckland, and took them to Wellington, sleeping in the car on the way south. On the way back the only food they had ’/as the accused stole from boxes on farmers’ gateways. Both girls were over 16 years. Replying to appeals by counsel for probation Mr F. K. Hunt said: “Yow men can’t get away with that—net in this city. Oh, no. They each will be sentenced to three months’ imprison ment on each of the conversion charges.” An order was made that while in prison they should be kept apart.
