CLASSIC GOLF IN AUSTRALIA

PLAY IN WOMEN’S SEMI-FINALS TWO NEW ZEALANDERS IN FINAL United Press Association—By Wectrto Telegraph—Copyright (Received September 1, 11.10 p.m.) ADELAIDE, September 1. A cloudy sky and a slight breeze made conditions excellent, for the semifinals of the women’s golf championship of Australia, which were played today at Seaton links. Results were: Mrs R. D. Fullerton-Smith (New Zealand) beat Mrs C. J. Negus (West Australia) 5 up and 3 to play. 4 Miss Oliver Kay (New Zealand) beat Miss E. H. Hutton (Victoria), 2 up. The final over 36 holes will be played to-morrow. Description of Play. Miss Kay had a hard fight against the Victorian. Both played exceptional golf. Miss Kay had an approximate round of 77 and Miss Hutton of 80. The first six holes had a hoodoo over Miss Hutton. She was 3 down to-day at that stage, and this deficit was too great to enable her to square the match. Miss Kay went out in 39 to stand 2 up. She lost the seventh hole to a birdie two, and the eighth to four. She won the long ninth in par five, took the tenth, and lost the twelfth to another birdie two. The thirteenth was a bad hole. Miss Kay took three to reach the green, and then took three putts. At this stage she was only one up. The nextfour holes were halved, and Miss Kay won the last in par four for the match. Neither Mrs Fullerton-Smith nor Mrs Negus played to their best form. Mrs Negus was at fault on the greens, missing easy putts. She was two down at the turn but should have been square. Mrs Fullerton Smith was out in 44 and Mrs Negus in 46. The New Zealander had a birdie three at the tenth. She had putting lapses at four holes after this, but the West Australian was unable to take the advantage. Mrs Fuller-ton-Smith took three putts at the short twelfth, missing a two-footer, but styming her opponent to take the hole and stand 4 up. She won the thirteenth with a six but lost the next to a par four, making her dormie four. She won the fifteenth in par five for the match. Form suggests Miss Kay as the likely winner, but Mrs Fullerton-Smith will be her strongest opponent yet.
