IMPROVING THE STREETS OF TIMARU.
Because of the increasing fame of Timaru as a Holiday resort, and because of its popularity as a favourite stop over place between the North and the South, if not for the main reason that the community expects something better, it is hoped that the municipal authorities in Timaru will lose no time in taking into serious consider ation the insistent requests that are being made for improved street lighting, and the obvious need for a clean up of the principal town thoroughfares before the weekly influx of visitors. Every evening an illuminated sign—which, by the way, gives an unsightly appearance to the Municipal Chambers during the day—tells the world that “Electricity is Cheap,” with special emphasis on the third word. The cynic could be excused if lie remarked by way of rejoinder that if electricity is cheap, why not lake it down from the top of the well-lighted Municipal Chambers and use a little more in the dark places of the town! It cannot be denied that the appearance of the town would be immensely improved by belter lighting. Ami this would certainly be appreciated by the townspeople in ■winter lime particularly. The untidy state of the main thoroughfares of the town at the, weekend speaks for itself, ami ought to be attended to without delay.
