THE RANFURLY SHIELD

To the Editor or * The TUnert! Herald ” Sir,—What in the name of goodness are we coming to? We have just been compelled by law to pay wages according to age instead of efficiency; to pay overtime at statutory rates, regardless of any compensating concessions granted; to shut our doors at certain specified hours in anybody’s face—except that of H.M. the Inspector; and so on, and so forth, until the average business man feels more like a criminal than a loyal citizen/ when bless my soul if the staff, man, boy and girl do not come along and ask for the day off! And what for! To go and see a football match! And for those who had the commonsense to stay behind the day was made hideous by the blaring of Wireless sets from every conceivable corner and vantage point. Really what a pathetic state of affairs for an allegedly educated and industrious community. I am given to understand that the matter at stake was the possession of a certain Shield presented by a previous Governor of this Dominion, and I venture to state that if this noble Lord had any conception of the state of lunacy to which his Shield has driyen the otherwise normal citizens of this Dominion he would immediately give orders for its destruction. It is quite on the cards that Mr Semple will before long have his gaols full of road-hogs and I take this opportunity of warning him that it will soon be necessary for him to enlarge his asylums for the reception of the country’s dangerously large number of football maniacs.—l am, etc., MUDDIED OAT.
