UNIVERSITY MEETING CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY E. PERRY MOUNT COOK, August 31. With the best snow conditions for three winters and equal to the best over a very long period, ski sports have been in progress for the last three days. Although primarily the annual university sports, these events have been combined with those for the many casual visitors. Throughout last week the capacity of the Ball Hut —100—has been taxed to the uttermost, and as this large party broke up the first contingent of the next party of 100 moved In in preparation for the most important meeting of the year In the South Island, the Mount Cook championships, to be held oh September 7,8, and 9. Snow conditions were perfected last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and again yesterday, by heavy falls of snow during each night and early morning. More than two feet were recorded at the Ball Hut, and there was very much more than that on the Ball Glacier, where the main sports are held. Under normal conditions excellent conditions for ski-ing should be available until well into November. The time of Barry Caulfield, the Swiss ski teacher and expert, has been fully occupied each day with tuition to schools or individuals, and his amazing artistry, the grace and ease of his movements fascinated all. . All the leading ski-ers at the university meeting have improved remarkably under his tuition during the week, notably Perry, the outstanding competitor. Few will forget Caulfield’s exhibition over the men’s slalom course after that event, which had been Won, and won in great style, by Pgrry, at an average of 38sec. Caulfield's average time was a shade better than 12 seconds; his speed was terrific and his control faultless. Most of the events were held on a slope in front of the hut under wonderful conditions. Denham 3. Time, 32min 20sec. Fourteen started. University Men’s Slalom—E. Perry (Canterbury) 1, P. Tuckey (Otago) 2, H. Jacobs (Otago) 3, E. H. Sealy (Otago) 4. Time of winner, 38 l-ssec average. Twenty-six started. Open Slalom—N. Adams 1, R. Jeffrey 2, M. T. Denham 3. Time of Winner, 54sec average. University Men’s Downhill—E. Perry (Canterbury) 1, P, Tuckey (Otago) 2, W. Struthers (Otago) 3, E. H. Sealy (Otago) 4. Times for two runs, 27sec, 30sec. Ten started. Open Downhill—N. Adams 1, M. T. Denham 2, B. F. Cook 3, A. H. Williams 4. Times for two runs, 31sec, 49sec. Fifteen started. Perry’s two victories gave Canterbury University College the university club's championship. Tuckey won the Otago University championship, with H. Jacobs runher-up. Perry won the university open championship. He is one of the most promising ski-ers of the season. Women’s Events. University Women’s Langlauf—N. Stewart (Otago) 1, D. Mclntosh (Otago) 2, C. Stewart (Otago) won the university women’s championship. RUAPEHU CLUB By Telegraph Press Association THE CHATEAU, September 1 Although much better than for more than a week, and the summit of Ruapehu clear for the first time during the winter sports, an exceedingly cold and strong wind made it impossible to continue the inter-Dominion ski contest to-day.
