CUSTOMS RETURNS
CHRISTCHURCH Bv Tel ear. on cress Association CHRISTCHURCH, September 1. The monthly returns of the Customs Department in Christchurch again show a big increase compared with last year. For August, 1936, the total revenue collected by the department was £156,160, a little more than £48,000 in excess of the receipts for August, 1935. Items in the return showing the greatest increases were customs (£23,837 more than in August of last year), sales tax (more than £lO,OOO in excess of last August’s figures), and petrol tax, the receipts from which were nearly trebled. For the five months of the present financial year the receipts total £733,877, compared with £606,810 for the corresponding period of 1935. ’ The detailed figures are as follows: August, August, 1935. 1936.
