IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch— Heavy rain, accompanied by a strong south-west wind, continued all day from the early hours of the morning, with hail at times and the temperature generally was low, the maximum for the day being 42.3 degrees. The barometer was rising slowly and at 9 p,m, read 29.75jn. Ashburton— Stormy conditions prevailed yesterday. Rain fell heavily in the morning, and when it ceased a violent wind blew from the sopth-west. The sky was overcast, with a cold temperature. The week-end was unsettled. Seventeen points of rain fell on Saturday, and 40 for the 24 hours ended at 9 a.ip, yesterday, making a total fall of 99 points since the rain began op Friday. Yesterday was bright in the morning and overcast in the afternoon, with a strong S.S.W. wind throughout the day. Dunedin—There was a fresh breeze from the south-east yesterday and heavy rain and hail showers fell at intervals throughout the day. The barometer fell slightly and registered 29.74 in last night.

General situation—Pressure is still rather low over New Zealand, the centre of the cyclonic disturbance being located to-day south of Chatham Island. An intense anti-cyclone extends across Australia on to the Western Tasman Sea.

Winds—South-westerly to southerly moderate to strong generally, and reaching gale force in places. Seas (New Zealand waters) —Rough generally and high on parts of the East Cape. Eastern Tasman Sea —Strong southwesterly to southerly winds to gales, with rough to high seas, but wind and sea later moderating.

Weather —Mainly fair to fine on the West Coast of the South Island, elsewhere changeable and squally, with further rain and on the higher levels snow; temperatures very cold during the next day or two, but conditions improving gradually from to-morrow.
