BANNED PLAY
PRODUCER CONVICTED AND FINED United Press Association—By Electric Telegrapb —Copyright (Received August 31, 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 31. At the Summons Court to-day Victor Arnold, of the New Theatre League, Sydney, was prosecuted and fined £3 for unlawfully producing the play “Till The Day I Die.”
The New Theatre League which presented ‘‘Waiting for Lefty,” a one-act play by Clifford Odets, which was criticised because it was claimed that it contained improper passages, was awarded the first prize at the City of Sydney Eisteddfod in the one-act play contest. This play, which is described as anti-Nazi, caused a disturbance when presented at Perth, where the newly formed “Blue Shirts” took exception to it. When t’ ? first attempt was made to present the play in Sydney, it was banned by Mr Chaffey, following a protest by the German Consular representative.
