EXPRESSES LATE
LINE BLOCKED BY SLIP By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, August 31. Railway traffic was seriously disorganised by a slip on the main north line in a cutting north of Purakanui, near the Cliffs section, which came down at 10 o’clock last night, covering 14 yards of the permanent way to a depth of four feet.
The midnight express for Christchurch was held up till 2.30 this morning, when the line was reported clear. When the train reached Purakanui, however, another slip blocked the way, the train returning to Dunedin. Its 300 passengers, including the Canterbury and South Canterbury Rugby teams were taken to Waitati by a fleet of buses this morning, being there transhipped to the down night train from Christchurch, which returned north, while its southern passengers were brought to Dunedin by bus.
It is hoped to despatch the ordinary north express before noon. The morning express for Christchurch left at 10.32, or two hours late, safely negotiating the slip.
