COSY LININGS

IN MOTOR-TYRE SLIPPERS

Old motor-tyres make very cosy and strong slippers. The soles are part of an old motor-tyre (outer cover); uppers, strong warm material, such as old felt hat; lining, calicobinding, braid; welt, strong braid or tape; wool fleece for padding sole. Use strong thread and cobbler’s needle to sew. Cut paper pattern exact size required for sole and uppers. Cut sole in motor-tyre, according to paper pattern, using a sharp knife or tinsmith’s “snips”; place some hot bricks on soles overnight to flatten. For the uppers, cut felt and calico lining according to paper pattern, allowing extra inch on each side of heel seam. Join at heel, open seam, and machine the extra inch down several times on each side of seam to strengthen heel. Bind upper edge of felt and Uning. Stitch the welt by hand with very strong thread; some narrow braid (or tape) doubled all round the lower portion V>f uppers. Pad calico with thin layer of wool fleece, then sew calico lining to the sole. To put the slippers together, first attach middle of toe of slipper to middle of toe of sole, then middie of heel to middle of heel of sole. Work round, catching only the welt and sewing through sole, leaving sole to project slightly beyond the upper like a brogue.
