MR N. P. LORY FAREWELLED A large gathering of residents of Washdyke and district met in the Washdyke Hall on Thursday night to bid farewell to Mr N. P. Lory, who has been headmaster at the Washdyke School for the last four years and who leaves next month on transfer to Opawa. Mr W. Parlane who presided, welcomed Mr G. Benstead, a member of the Education Borad, and apologised for the absence of Mr J. W. Preen, Mr H. J. Harris (chairman of the Washdyke Progress League) and Mr W. Blay. The chairman referred to the good influence Mr Lory had had on the children and the many improvements he had effected to the school grounds. He expressed appreciation of the work

of Mrs Lory in supervising the pupils going to and from the manual training centre and the dental clinic. While residents regretted losing Mr Lory, they congratulated him on his promotion to a better position and wished him success.

In presenting Mr Lory with a cheque on behalf of the residents, Mr Benstead said that the finest tribute Mr Lory could have had paid him was the large attendance at the function, which testified to his wide popularity. Mr Benstead said that Mr Lory had been one of the first to take his coat off and assist with the task of sinking a well in the school grounds to procure a pure water supply for the children, and he complimented him on his enthusiasm over school matters generally. He hoped that Mr Lory would use the cheque to purchase something which would serve to remind him of the friends he had made during his stay at Washdyke and of his happy association with the school and district.

On behalf of the Girls’ Basketball Club, Miss E. Cartwright presented Mrs Lory with a handsome gift. Other speakers were Mrs D. Kellahan (Jubilee Committee), Mr T- Atherton (School Committee), Mr C. Hooper (Progress League), Mr H. King (Cricket Club), and Mr F. Stocker, who had been for 20 years a member of the School Committee.

In acknowledging the presentations, Mr Lory expressed appreciation of the fine sentiments which had been expressed, and said he regretted very much having to leave the district in which he had made many friends. He hoped that in time to come Washdyke would increase its grading and that he would be able to take up again his old post as headmaster.

During the evening items were given by the school pupils and by Miss Joan Greenall’s pupils.
