GERALDINE

FARMERS’ UNION LOCAL BRANCH MEETS The president (Mr F. Charles) occupied the chair at. a meeting of the Geraldine branch of the Farmers’ Union. Mr W. J. Polson. M.P.. past president of the Union, wrote expressing thanks to the branch for its motion of appreciation of his services. He was very pleased to receive it. and to know that he had many friends among the farming community in the Geraldine district. He hoped that, although no longer president, he would be able to serve the organisation as much as in the past. The president reported that the meetings at Pleasant Valley and Arundel. at which greatly appreciated addresses had been given by the president of the South Canterbury Executive (Mr A. Ward) and the provincial secretary (Mr A. B. Struthers), had been well attended. Mr Charles intimated that Mr P. J. O’Regan, a Canterbury and West Coast representative on the Dominion Executive, would give an address to farmers at Geraldine next week.

The president of the Geraldine Branch of the W.D.F.U. (Mrs M. Burdon) waited on the Committee to ask for the support of the Farmers’ Union at an afternoon entertainment organised by the W.D.F.U. Mrs Burdon referred to the good work by the W.D.F.U. to help farmers’ wives, and explained that the proceeds from the entertainment would go to the community chest.

The president assured Mrs Burdon of the support of members of the Farmers’ Union in connection with the function.

Mr C. W. Lynn referred to the excessive license fee charged for farmers’ motor trucks in comparison with the charge for carriers.

On the motion of Mr Lynn, it was decided that a remit concerning this question be referred to the Provincial Executive with a view to having represention made to the Government in connection with the matter.

EXCURSION TRAIN

THIRTY LOCAL PASSENGERS About 30 local passengers joined the special excursion train for Christchurch on Saturday in connection with the Dominion basketball tournament. Twenty members of Geraldine and Orari Bridge basketball teams, who wished to attend the North Island versus South Island match, were included among the passengers who joined the train at Orari.

BRISTOL CUP TEAM The following will represent the Geraldine District Golf Club in the Bristol Cup match at Timaru next Thursday: T. C. Clarkson, A. L. Brenton, E. E. Scott, R. Patrick, D. C. Williamson, and Dr. L. C. Mail.
