ROAD RELAY
WAIMATE TO TIMARU WON BY TIMARU A With a convincing win in the relay race from Waimate to Timaru on Saturday, the Timaru A harrier team registered its fifth win in the local harrier competitions this season, its senior team accounting for three events and its junior team for two. The first relays were despatched from Waimate by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr W. G. Paul), considerable interest being shown at the start. The showery weather’ made the going unpleasant, while the southerly wind throughout the afternoon added to the discomfort, of the runners. The road, however, was in better condition for the race than last year, when several miles of it was under repair. Some of the competitors felt the effects of the bitumen surface, but generally they stood the test well and finished their laps with something in reserve. Timaru A, which had a handicap of 6min„ showed good team work and won with more than three minutes to spare. The standard, generally, was very high, and some excellent performances weri registered. A large crowd gathered at the Post Office to witness the finish about 5 o’clock. T. Shivas, captain of the Timaru side, came home at a fairly easy gait to win comfortably and earn a round of applause. Results:— Timaru A (Wilson, O’Leary, Walker, McKay, Squire, Shivas) (6min.), 171.75 1. Anglican A (Taylor, Meechim, Craig. Jones, Darby, Meechim) (Sftmin), 174.43. 2. Anglican B (Bennett. Tizard. Dangerfield, Scott, Wain, Tubb) (14min) 175.3, 3. Presbyterian (Mathieson, McKirdy, Wallace, Carnie, Strachan, Green) (scr.), 175.52, 4.
