CLERICAL WORKERS

AUCKLAND UNION’S CLAIMS By Telegraph—Piess Association AUCKLAND, August 28. The Auckland Clerical and Office Staff Employees Industrial Union of Workers, formed recently, has served claims for an award in the northern industrial district. If the claim succeeds thousands of offices in Auckland and centres as far distant as Gisborne will be covered by the award. The union will probably be one of the largest in New Zealand. The minimum wages sought for male office assistants are 15/- for a worker commencing at the age of 14 years, £1 and £l/5/- for the first and second six months respectively at the age of 15; £l/10/- and £l/15/- for the first and second perioo at the age of 16; £2 and £2/7/6 for the first and second period at the age of 17, and thereafter rising by yearly stages to £6/15/- at the age of 26 and thereafter on merit. It is asked that female clerks be paid the same rate as males until they receive £4/10/- and thereafter on merit. The commencing rate for junior typists is set down as £l, with six monthly increases. The rates for typistes range from £3/5/- at 21 years to £4 at 26, and for stenographers from £3/5/- to £4/10/- in the same period. The hours asked for are 38 weekly. It is also claimed that employees shall not be required to do work for employers in the latter’s homes, and that employers shall not seek to influence the private lives of employees.
