WAIMATE

ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY QUAIL LIBERATED A meeting of the Waimate Acclimatisation Society was held on Thursday evening, those present being Messrs S. Cox (president), J. F. Rathgen, J. Tiffen, N. Mines, F. Nash, A. E. Higgins, G. S. Foord, G. Kilworth, F. Pollock, W. T. Anderson. The secretary reported that the consignment of 50 quail had arrived tn good conditions from the Otago Society and had been liberated. The Ashburton Society invited the attendance of two members of the Society to the dinner and social evening to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary. Messrs F. Nash and S. Cox were appointed to attend. The North Canterbury Society wrote inquiring if the Waimate Society was in the market for pheasants for the 1937 season. It was decided to write asking for quotations. The meeting discussed the question of hours of attendance by the caretaker at the telephone at Waitaki fishing camp and it was finally decided that the hours be: 9 to 9.30 and 11.30 to 1 p.m. Mr Foord reported that he had visited the hatcheries at Hakataramea. Mr Main had stated the Society’s consignment of fry had not yet arrived, and he was anxious to receive it. It was decided to write to the Otago Society inquiring when the fry would be coming forward. The Ashburton Acclimatisation Society advised it had considered the question of the issue of licenses to sell a salmon taken by rod and line, and that it was of the opinion that selling licenses were detrimental to the sport of angling. The council intended to approach the Minister of Marine with a view to the abolition of rod and line selling licenses for salmon, but before doing so requested the opinion of the Waimate Society on the matter. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE WAITUNA The monthly meeting of the Waituna Women’s Institute was presided over by the president, Mrs Officer, who welcomed new members and visitors. It was decided to support the bay at the Waimate Winter Show. Mrs Officer read the report of the Dominion Conference and was accorded a vote of thanks. The Willowbridge Institute then entertained the members. Demonstrations were given by Mrs Faulkner of icing a cake and Miss Hollamby of pen painting. A vote of thanks was passed to the Willowbridge members. Competitions resulted.—Bulb in fibre: , Mrs Grant. Bottled apricots: Mrs McDiarmid. Best bloom: Mrs Bailey. Polyanthus, Mrs Good. Songs were contributed by the choir. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Hoskings, Hutt, Howe, Fagan and Morgan.

SAVAGE CLUB A RAID BY OAMARU The Waimate Savage Club at its last meeting received, a raiding party from the Oamaru Club, the members Gf which provided the concert programme. Great Chief S. Cameron (Oamaru) was installed for the evening by former Great Chief L. J. Collins, who apologised for the absence through indisposition of Great Chief G. R. Watters. Songs were sung by Savages J. Spiers, W. Hinton and C. Campbell; instrumental numbers were given by Brave McDiarmid, Savages H. McDonnell *nd Purnell; humorous interludes were given by Braves Fawcett and Harward, Savages Proudfoot. Kelk. Millard, Ruddock and Caldwell. A humorous duet was given by Savages Kelk and Millard, and a haka by Brave McDiarmid. An interesting talk was given by Savage Restall on growing fruit for household purposes. A party is being arranged to visit the Ashburton Club on September 26. DEBATING TIMARU v. ST. JOSEPH’S A team of the Timaru Catholic Debating Club journied to Waimate on Thursday evening to take part in a debate against St. Joseph's Literary ■•nd Debating Society, Waimate. The Waimate side won by three points. Mr N. Knell presided over a fair attendance and Miss M. Whelan acted as judge. The subject of the debate was “That it would be in the best interests of New Zealand for the Government to limit the competition of road traffic in the interest of the State Railways.” The Timaru Catholic team, Messrs J. Dwyer and A. Murphy, took the negative and St. Joseph’s, Messrs J. Hynes. M. Leonard and V. Leonard the affirmative. Mr A. Murphy spoke twice. At the conclusion a vote of thanks was passed to Miss Whelan for judging the debate. BASKETBALL The following will represent St. Patrick’s A team to-day: N. Murphy, M. Bray, E. Hannifin. M. Crowe, R.
