COMPETITIONS

SUCCESSFUL SEASON ENDED DEMONSTRATION CONCERT The annual competitions promoted by the South Canterbury Piping and Dancing Association were brought to a successful conclusion in the Theatre Royal last night when the trophies were presented, and an enjoyable programme given by the prizewinners. The performers represented the pick of the juvenile talent of the district together with some outstanding competitors from Christchurch, Dunedin, Ashburton and Oamaru and the programme was most varied, including national, fancy and operatic dancing, elocutionary, vocal and instrumental items. At an interval, the president (Mr Duncan Cameron) expressed the Association’s thanks to the competitors, judges, .the public, the accompaniste, pipers, Mr H. Kennedy, and Theatre Royal staff, the Timaru Highland Pipe Band, the newspapers, and to all who had assisted to bring the competitions to a successful conclusion. Before presenting the prizes,, the Mayor (Mr P. C. Vinnell), congratulated the winners on their success and urged the unplaced competitors to accept their defeat in the right spirit, and to try again next year. The Association had put before the public something which was well worth supporting, and he hoped that next year the public would lend better support than they had done this week.
