AL ROMERO IS CLASS FIGHTER
Though a permanent wave was in evidence about his waistband, Al Romero (11.6), in outpointing Tommy
Jones (10.11) at Sydney Stadium on Monday night, revealed himself as next to Rosenbloom the finest importation of the National Boxing Club.
It will be said that with the good weight advantage he should have knocked out the negro, but the extra poundage was a handicap. “Look,” he remarked afterwards, as he took a handful of avoirdupois where it was most prominent, “I went on the boat at lO.lOi and I was 13.0 when I came off. I can do best at 10.7.”
If Al can fight at the welter limit Sydney would like to see him up against Carroll. A snappy puncher, able to use either hand with equal effect to head or body, and great in his blocking, he impressed from the start.
Romero looked like finishing the bout in the third, when a battery sent
Jones reeling to the ropes. He sagged at the knees and seemed all in when the gong sounded.
Romero was uppermost right through, though the black fought gamely, and was deserving of credit only a little less than the visitor received. The finest fight patrons have seen for a long time was witnessed by a poor crowd.
