DISTRICT ACTIVITIES A euchre party and dance held in theHobson Hall, Rangitata Island, on Saturday evening was largely attended. Prizes given by Mr F. H. Ruddenklau were won by Mrs Ruddenklau and Mr F. Hearn. For the dance after supper music was contributed by Messrs W. Fawdray and J. Miller, while Mr W. Tate was M.C. At the School Committee’s fortnightly social, winners at cards were Mrs Quinlan and Mr M. Snell. The trophies for the winners were given by Messrs Gapper and Sheen and Mr S. Douglas respectively. Music for the dancing was contributed by Mrs Metcalf and Messrs Fawdray and Murphy. Mr M. Snell was the M.C. Teams for the Arundel and Rangitata Island Miniature Rifle Clubs played a friendly game of football at Rangitata Island, the home side winning by 21 points to 3. At afternoon tea Mr McCully thanked the Rangitata Island people for their hospitality and Mr W. Tate responded. The referees were Messrs W. M. Metcalf and F. H. Ruddenklau. Keall gave the usual address. “THE BIG BROADCAST OF 1936” “The Big Broadcast of 1936,” coming to-night to the Elite Theatre not only has an hilariously romantic theme as its plot but includes specialty numbers by famous radio, stage and screen personalities as part of the story. The action centres around Jack Oakie and Henry Wadsworth, two owners and performers of a radio station. Facing bankrupcty, they decide to compete in an international broadcast contest which awards a 250,000 dollar advertising contract to the best programme submitted. A rich young Countess, Lyda Roberti, and her secretary, Miss Barrie, met them and take them oil to her private kingdom on a Cuban Island where they encounter many funny expor mces. Burns and Allen and the Nicholas Brothers also furnish many of the humorous situations.
