Disturbed conditions in Europe and the influence of the holidays accounted for the thoroughly quiet conditions on the stock markets. There were no price changes of any significance, and the volume of business contracted. Active Butter Market Butter continues very active, but Continentals are not sharing to the full. Empire advances are the main support of the market, which undoubtedly has been competitive. Retailing, which while not allowing the shops the full profits, helped the consumption. The tendency is towards higher levels, but buyers are daily becoming more cautious. America bought occasional parcels of New Zealand butter. The drought in the United States has affected cheese values, which have further sharply advanced. The Australian and New Zealand apple season is dragging to a weary close. Arrivals are small and much of the fruit is in poor condition. The demand is disappointing.
