CHURCH CRISIS IN GERMANY
RESOUNDING APPEAL ISSUED MENACE IN EDICTS OF NAZISM United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright BERLIN, August 23. A manifesto summoning Christians to defend their faith was read from thousands of pulpits by pastors of the Confessional or Opposition Movement in the German Evangelical Church. The manifesto emphasises the dangers facing Christianity through the totalitarian claims of National Socialism, and says that the Gospel of Jesus Is being attacked with unparalleled pressure, the young generation being accustomed to the depreciation, even the derision, of the Christian faith. The manifesto demands a ban on church meetings in public rooms, restrictions on the church press, the removal of appeals and authorities who will fulfil the Government’s promise to defend the Christian religion.
