LORI) RUTHERFORD
PORTRAIT PRESENTED TO NELSON COLLEGE By Telegraph —urebs Association NELSON. August 22 The Nelson College Old Boys last year commissioned Mr Frank Emanuel to paint a picture of Lord Rutherford, of Nelson, their most distinguished old boy. The picture is in oils, on a canvas about five feet long and four feet high. Lord Rutherford is shown seated, handling a piece of scientific apparatus. The painting will be of historic interest, as in the words of Lord Rutherford, the “apparatus depicted is the original used by me, showing for the first time the transmutation of nitrogen by bombarding with swift alfa particles.” The painting was presented to the college to-day in the presence of a crowded gathering in the assembly hall. Reference was made to Lord Rutherford’s outstanding work in the world of science, and his continued close personal interest in his old school. His example, his greatness, and his unassuming nature were regarded as a great inspiration to present and future scholars.
