BADMINTON

TIMARU CLUB The Timaru Club, after a most successful season, has decided that the season must end almost at once, and the closing night has been fixed for Wednesday. It is hoped that as many members as possible will be present that evening, and all friends of the club are cordially invited to be present. Also ■ anyone who is sufficiently Interested in the game to wish to try it will be welcome, and shall be given an opportunity to hit the little shuttle about. During last week the finals of the men’s championship handicap events were played the winner of both events being J. Milliken. In the championship event, he defeated V. Oakey 15-6, 15-11. In the handicap event he defeated W. Heads 23-22. This was an exceptionally close game. Milliken conceded 4 points to Heads, but after he had picked up these, every point was hard fought. On more than one occasion Heads was very close to match point, but each time Milliken made a wonderful recovery, and in the end succeeded in clinching the matter in his favour. Congratulations Milliken, on your two latest successes! With the finals of these two events, the club events are concluded and just before leaving the subject, mention should be made of all those who so kindly gave their services as umpires for the various matches, particularly V. Martin and R. Lewis, who certainly did a large share of it between them. Their club mates tender them their thanks for so willingly giving their services when called upon. Recently a very enjoyable match was played with the Christchurch club, resulting in a win for the Timaru club by 18 games to 14. Detailed results of this match have already been published. In the near future It is hoped to have a friendly match with one of the Dunedin teams. These Inter-club games give excellent experience to those players fortunate enough to take part in them, and next season It is hoped that it will be possible to have more of them than was the case this year. In last week’s notes Miss I. Eaton was stated to have won the handicap singles. This she did some weeks ago, and it was the championship singles in which she was successful this time. In the ladder match recently played between Pateman and Lewis, Pateman was the winner after a hard-fought game. Next Saturday the Timaru club is holding its first prize-giving function, at which the trophies won for the various events will be presented.
