HUIMAI WINS BURNETT SHIELD MATCH AT ALBURY Huimai, the leading team from Waimate, defeated Southern at Albury on Saturday afternoon in a match for the Burnett Shield, by 16 points to 3. The game was played on a dry field and was consequently fast and one of the best seen in the Mackenzie Sub-Union this year. Huimai thoroughly deserved their win, but on the other hand, Southern, in the light of recent performances, played better than their supporters expected. The visitors owed thejr victory to good combined play. Southern won the toss and Huimai kicked off. R was soon apparent that the teams were fairly evenly matched. Southern obtained a good share of the ball from set scrums and attacked several times early in the game, but were unable to finish off any of their movements. After 20 minutes of play, a loose scrum was formed in the visiting team’s half, and the Huimai forwards hooked cleanly. The ball went to Lundy, to Flynn, who with a “dummy,” beat the opposition before sending on to Cummings, who scored half-way between the posts and the corner flag. The same player converted. From the kick off, Hanham and Elliott led a Southern dribblipg rush deep into the opposition territory, but T. Heath picked up smartly and found the line at half-way. Huimai set up a counterattack and pressed consistently on the Southern line. When attempting to clear from a set scrum, Dewar miskicked to Cummings who gathered in smartly and found the opposition out of position. He handed on to J. Bartlett who made his way over for a good try. Cummings’s kick hit the crossbar. Southern went on attack, and Austin the five-eighths, made a good opening before handing on to Smith, to Rodgers, who was pulled down near the line. A set scrum gave Huimai much-needed relief. N. Donaldson again put Southern on the attack with a long kick from the half-way line, but halftime was called with the score: Huimai 8, Southern 0. The second spell opened with Southern on the attack, but from loose play, E. Allnutt dribbled downfield and picked up to transfer to S. Meynell who went over near the corner for a good try. Cummings again hit the cross-bar. H. Campbell, a Southern player, went off injured, and was replaced by J. Anderson. From a good opening made by Flynn of Huimai, Clearwater ran well down the wing, but was tackled from behind by Rodgers, who took Hay in the same movement and allowed Donaldson to effect a good save. Huimai started to obtain more of the ball from set scrums and their backs staged several fine passing movements. On one occasion when I. Meynell found his way blocked, he turned play back to his forwards who started a neat movement for J. Moir to score near the posts. Gummings goaled. In the last few minutes of the game, the Southern forwards set up a brisk attack and Huimai forced. Southern maintained the pressure, however, and from a loose scrum, Dewar went round on the blind side to score. Austin missed the kick. Time was called with the score Huimai 16, Southern 3. Mr D. S. Loder was referee. The visiting team was entertained at dinner by the Southern club at the Albury Hotel, and the Burnett Shield was presented.
