Messrs C. M. Vickridge, L. J. Morrison rWellington), G. W. Andrews and J. R. Buckley (Christchurch) are staying at the Dominion. Messrs V. G. Holloway, F. Rawstorn (Dunedin) and B. R. Henderson (Hamilton) are staying at the Grand. Messrs C. Fleming (Dunedin), M. Black (Christchurch) and R. Fidler (Winton) are registered at the Empire. Messrs F. Lockwood, H. W. Bedell, F. Manton (Wellington) and J. H. Pennington (Dunedin) are staying at the Grosvenor. Advice has been received in Timaru that Dr. A. M. Hartnell has been successful in passing the London examinations in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, entitling him to the letters M.C.O.G. Gratification at the progress made by Mr A. W. Barnett (Morven) in his illness was expressed by members of the South Canterbury Executive of the Farmers' Union at a meeting yesterday. It was stated that Mr Barnett had left hospital and returned home. Dr. W. Pascoe Goard, LL.D., F.R.G.S., F.R.E.S., of London, a vice-president of the British-Israel World Federation, accompanied by Major Barrows (Wellington) and Mr Trevor Armstrong (Christchurch), are visiting Timaru and are staying at the Grosvenor. Mr G. T. Cuthbert, 8.E., engineer to the Poverty Bay Electric Power Board, has received advice from London that he had been elected an associate of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, which was founded in 1847 and incorporated by Royal charter in 1930. The new Commissioner of Pensions, Mr H. Digby Smith, whose appointment was consequent on the selection by the Government of Mr J. H. Boyes (Pensions Commissioner for some years) for the office of Public Service Commissioner, has now taken up his duties. Educated at the Otago Boys’ High School, Mr Smith was appointed to u cadetship in the accountants’ branch of the General Post Office in 1906 and became attached to the Old Age Pensions Division. Later he was transferred to the Pensions Department; in 1914-15 was Registrar of Pensions at Invercargill, in 1921-23 Registrar at Wellington, and in 1923 Registrar at Auckland. Mr Smith, who was selected Assistant Commissioner at Wellington in 1929, had service in the Great War. joining with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in 1915. He served in the war zones with a commission in the Otago Regiment, and afterwards was with the army of occupation in Germany. Like his predecessor, Mr Smith is an experienced angler
