GERALDINE

TRIBUTES TO TEACHER FAREWELL AT HILTON The large attendance at the farewell presentation and dance in honour of Miss K. W. Hewson, who has been in charge of the Hilton School for the past nine years, and who has been transferred to the Ashburton East School, was a striking tribute to the esteem in which she was held throughout the district. The Hilton Hall was crowded to capacity at the function held on Thursday evening. The chairman of the School Committee (Mr J. M. Little), who presided, expressed regret that the school was losing Miss Hewson. With the readmission of the five-year-olds there had been numerous transfers among the teachers, and, unfortunately for Hilton, Miss Hewson was going to Ashburton. Since Miss Hewson had been in charge, the School had gained a splendid moral tone, and on the scholastic side, she had gained practically 100 per cent of passes. Miss Hewson had been cosecretary of the jubilee committee, and in spite of the great amount of work connected with the celebrations, she had paid special attention to the proficiency pupils and had had splendid results. Although sorry to lose Miss Hewson, the committee assured her that she carried the good wishes of the residents of Hilton for her future success. (Applause). Miss E. M. Mouat, the assistant teacher, who paid a warm tribute to her colleague said that Miss Hewson was a capable teacher who was not afraid of hard work, and was ever ready to give of her time, energy and experience for the good of the School. She had won the respect and love of her pupils, and, to the speaker, Miss Hewson had been more than a kind friend.

Miss Mouat then invited Colleen Brosnahan, the senior girl, to make the presentation of a leather suitcase to Miss Hewson on behalf of the pupils, which she did amidst hearty applause. Messrs P. G. , junr., M. O’Neill and W. L. Beattie, cordially endorsed the chairman’s remarks, and paid warm tributes to Miss Hewson’s capabilities and personality. Mr E. O. Winmill, who had been chairman during the nine years of Miss Hewson’s term up till 1935, referred to the transformation Miss Hewson had effected at the school. Prior to her time discipline had been somewhat slack, but she had not only made a wonderful change, but the pupils regarded her as a friend. Another matter in which she had effected a splendid improvement was in the state of the school grounds, which were now a credit to her. Mr B. Jones, an ex-committee man, also endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers.

The chairman then invited Mrs E. O. Winmill to make a presentation of a crocodile handbag and a fountain pen and pencil set to Miss Hewson. Mrs Winmill warmly commended Miss Hewson on her many little kindnesses to the children, which were such that only a mother or parent could fully appreciate. In acknowledging the tributes and gifts, Miss Hewson expressed regret at leaving Hilton where she had been most happily associated with the parents and her pupils. She was sure she needed nothing tangible to remind her of Hilton, where they had always showed her the greatest kindness. Miss Hewson thanked the School Committee for their co-operation and support, and the parents for their interest and help. She hoped that this fine spirit would be shown to her successor.

The function was followed by a dance, Messrs H. Brosnahan and J. Brenton acting as M.C’s. During the evening Miss G. Hughes rendered vocal solos, and responded to an encore. After the chairman had thanked Miss Hughes, who had attended the function at some inconvenience, the proceedings closed with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem.
