WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WASHDYKE At the August meeting of the Washdyke Women’s Institute, Mrs McDuff presided over a good attendance. A welcome was extended to visitors. Mrs T. King, delegate to the Dominion Federation, gave a very interesting report on the conference. It was decided that an order bo placed with the Returned Soldiers’ League, Christchurch. It was suggested that all members bring some article or articles to bo forwarded to the Makogai leper station.

A demonstration of thrift rug making was given by Mrs Doak, Mrs Darling and Mrs Hansen. Competitions, judged by Mrs McGillivray and Mrs Doak, resulted as follows:—Four oven scones, Mrs James 1, Mrs Slevwright 2, Mrs Gaffaney 3; juniors, Miss B. Kellahan 1; senior premier bloom, Mrs Anderson; junior, Miss N. King. The hostesses were Mrs Glen day, Misses Cartwright, Aitken and B. Kellahan. ORARI Mrs Unwin presided over a fair attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Orari Women’s Institute, held in the Anglican Schoolroom. Mrs Unwin read correspondence in connection with a special appeal for Christmas gifts for lepers, and gave a comprehensive report on the conference in Dunedin. She was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs Brenton read an interesting letter from Turpington. Mrs Firman gave a demonstration of silk art embroidery and displayed some dainty samples, and was accorded a vote of thanks. Results of the competitions were: Knitted socks, Mrs Cone 1 and 2; soap, Miss D. Womer 1, Mrs Cone 2, Mrs W. Prattley 3; best bloom, Mrs Johnston 1, Mrs W. Smith 2. Hostesses were Mesdames Gerard and Cone, Misses N. and W. Gerard, S. Grimsey and L. Cone. TE NGAWAI At the Te Ngawai Women’s Institute’s monthly meeting, Mrs Cain presided over a very fair attendance. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Browne, Glen-iti, for judging the programme competition, which was won by Miss Z. Elliott, with Miss P. Howes second. Other competitions resulted:— Seed cake, Miss Elliott 1, Miss Howes 2; oat cake, Miss Morrison 1, Miss Howes 2. A motion of sympathy was passed to the families of the late Mr F. H. Smith and Mr Anderson, both being very old residents of the district. The delegate to the conference gave a very comprehensive report, for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. Mr Powell gave an interesting travel talk, and was accorded a vote of thanks. ' The hostesses were Misses Elliott and Morrison. AROWHENUA The general meeting of the Arowhenua Women’s Institute was held in the Arowhenua Hall on Monday. Mrs K. Rehu presided and welcomed members and visitors. The motto for the month was: “Cleave to that which is right.” "Kia u kite pal.”

Votes of thanks were accorded all who assisted during the birthday evening. An invitation to attend their birthday party and to contribute items towards their programme was accepted from Rosewill.

Birthday greetings are to be forwarded to Fairview.

Those dealing with the lepers at Makogai Island, and the forthcoming folk dancing festival, were referred t& the executive committee.

The president then gave a comprehensive report as a result of her visit as delegate to the Dominion Conference in Dunedin, and was accorded a vote of thanks.

Mrs Shallcrass was introduced and gave a short address on home nursing, and was accorded a vote of thanks. The winners of the competitions were: One kind of toffee, Mrs D. Waters 1, Mrs W. Williams 2, Mrs Paynter 3. Best article from an old felt hat, Miss A. Hopkinson 1 and 2, Mrs D. Waters 3. Best wool worked mat by machine. Miss J. Hopkinson 1, Mrs D. Waters 2, Mrs Paynter 3. Mesdames Shallcrass and Brooklands of the Temuka Women’s Institute, the two judges, were accorded votes of thanks. During the afternoon social items by members were also enjoyed. The winner of the roll call, “Household task I dislike most,” was found in Mrs H. Taipana. Hostesses at afternoon tea were Mesdames W. Mihaka and R. Jamieson. The National Anthem concluded a pleasant afternoon. HUNTER Mrs Wallace presided over a fair attendance of members at the monthly meeting. A vote of thanks was passed to those who helped in any way towards the Winter Show. Miss M. Mercer gave the gardening talk. The Roll Call,’’ a “cooking hint’’ proved quite interesting. Miss E. Cooper gave her report on the Dominion conference in Dunedin, the president expressing thanks to Miss Cooper. Competitions resulted - Supper cloth: Miss Anstey 1. Mrs Manson 2. Funniest picture: Mrs L. Robinson 1, Mrs Wallace and Miss Turner equal 2. Specimen bloom: Miss Turner 1. Miss Wallace and Miss A. Cooper equal 2.
