WAR DECLARED ON COMMUNISTS

REDS CHALLENGE HEARST SEQUEL TO FIGHT OF NEWSPAPERS PROTESTS AGAINST ALIENS United Press Association—R? Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received August 21, 7.30 p.m.) SEATTLE, August 20. The appearance of Harry Bridges in a new role, occurred as the result of the suspension of the publication of “The Post Intelligencer,’’ a Hearst morning newspaper. Union Calls Strike The Journalists’ Union, known as the Newspaper Guild, which is calling a strike, due to the discharge of two members from the journal, obtained the support of the teamsters and longshoremen’s Union thus creating an effective picket line and making impossible the entry of printers and other employees. The paper has now remalneed unpublished for a week. Challenge Accepted Mr Hearst, cabling a statement from Rome, says he spent a million dollars to maintain the newspaper during the depression. The issue was one of the freedom of the Press and the country. He drew attention to the activities of the Longshoremen’s Union, of which Bridges is the leading spirit. He said: “There is no country, even an independent one, which allows citizens of alien lands to advocate alien doctrines, like Bridges (who is a British subject unnaturalised here, and unwilling to be naturalised) to defy its laws and its constitution and ride roughshod over its liberties. But whether anybody else makes a fight against Communism,’’ Mr Hearst adds, “we are going to make it, and I have enlisted for the duration of the war.”
