WORK FOR THE WEEK

FLOWER GARDEN Bare places in lawns should now be repaired. Where turfing is not practicable the surface should be broken with a fork or sharp rake, sown with grass seed and lightly covered with fine soil. Annuals and biennials which were sown in autumn, or those placed in their flowering quarters at that time should be kept free from weeds and have the soil stirred whenever possible. Early sowings of hardy annuals such as Calendula, Limnanthus, Cornflowers, Llnarias etc. may now be put into the soil in warm comers. In every case it is best to sow thinly and afterwards thin boldly, so that the resultant plants may have plenty of space to develop. Plant anemones and ranunculus for late flowering, the former with the narrow end upwards and the ranunculus with the claws downwards. Plant out cuttings of Violas and Pansies. VEGETABLE GARDEN Old beds of Brussels Sprouts, cabbages and brocolli should be cleared off and the areas limed and dug whenever possible. Cabbage, cauliflower, Jerusalem artichokes, asparagus and all kitchen herbs should be planted at the first opportunity. Hoeing should be attended to among all growing crops whenever the weather conditions are suitable. Early peas should be earthed up and given an occasional dressing of lime. First and second—early potatoes should be placed in sprouting boxes and given as much sun as possible. • New beds of strawberries should now be laid down. Crops will deteriorate if kept on the same ground for longer than two or three years. Sowings of early dwarf peas, shorthorn carrots, globe beet, lettuce and spinach may now be made in sheltered or sunny gardens.
