DIRECT CONTROL
TIMARU COMMITTEE DISBANDED
STATE TO ATTEND TO EMPLOYMENT The Timaru Unemployment Committee, which was formed at a conference of local bodies and other organisations interested, in Timaru four years ago, has been disbanded. The then Mayor of Timaru (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite), who presided at the initial meeting, was elected chairman and held office up till the time of his death. The reasons for the disbanding of the committee have been conveyed in a letter to members by the secretary (Mr E. C. J. Foot), who wrote as follows: “As you are probably aware that it is the policy of the present Government to assume direct control of all State activities, the Minister of Labour has notified that it now becomes necessary for all employment promotion duties to be entirely administered by his Department. I am directed by him and by his Department to express to you the sincere appreciation of the sendee you have rendered in assisting in the administration of the various schemes introduced with the object of relieving unemployment. It is acknowledged that the services of the committee were of considerable value in connection with the various phases of the unemployment question and the spirit which prompted the individual members of the Committee to place at the disposal of the Government a considerable amount of their leisure time, has been greatly appreciated. “I now, therefore, formally notify you that the Committee has been disbanded and would like to express my own appreciation of the co-operation and help which has been given to me in past years.”
