PLEASANT POINT

CARD EVENING Members and friends of the local i branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association held a card party in the supper room of the Town Hall, when an enjoyable time was spent. Supper was served at the close of the function. ACCIDENT H. Popplewell met with an accident when he jumped from a motor lorry on Saturday. It was feared that he had broken a leg. Medical aid was Immediately summoned but his injuries were not so serious as thought. FOOTBALL Saturday’s game on the Domain oval was Old Boys v. Pleasant Point in the fourth grade Rugby competition. After an excellent game in which the visiting backs showed fine combination, Old Boys won by 14 points to 6. Mr T. P. Small refereed. OBITUARY One of the pioneers, Mr Philip Brown, died on August 6, at the age of 81. As a lad of 18 Mr Brown, accompanied by his brothers John and George, left his home in Hertfordshire, England, and migrated to New Zealand in the sailing ship Ballackmile. They landed at Lyttelton and proceeded to South Canterbury, where work was immediately secured in the Pleasant Point district on the holding of French and Sharland and Pilbrow, and later on the Levels Estate. For many years Mr Brown worked for Mr Geo. Saunders on his chaffcutting plant, and was joined by a younger brother, Mr Dave Brown, who arrived three years later, in the ship Hereford. After saving a little money he purchased a small farm from Mr J. Esler, two miles above the Point township. This holding he farmed until about 1921 When he sold out and retired to live in the township. Mr Brown took no active part in any organisation, but was always very interested in Dominion politics. He is survived by his brothers George, who acquired land in thb Oxford district, and Dan, who to6k up a holding in Marlborough, when the Starborough Estate was Subdivided. The funeral, which was largely attended by relatives and friends, took place on Sunday afternoon. The ftev. C. C. Oldham conducted the services at St. Albans Church and at the graveside.
