ARBOR DAY HILTON SCHOOL FUNCTION Arbor Day was fittingly celebrated at the Hilton School when trees were planted to commemorate the school’s diamond jubilee, which took place in October of last year. The headmistress (Miss K. W. Hewson), welcomed the members of the School Committee, and Mr A. E. Archibald, chairman of the Jubilee Committee. Mr J. M. Little, chairman of the School Committee, who addressed the pupils on the Arbor Day movement, invited Mr Archibald to plant the diamond jubilee tree, a scarlet oak, near the school gate. Mr A. E. Archibald, in addressing the pupils, said that the planting of the trees could be described as the closing ceremony of the jubilee celebrations. He asked the present pupils to care for the trees that were being planted. Mr L. Beattie, an ex-pupil, then planted another scarlet oak to be known as the ex-pupils’ tree. Other trees were then planted by members of the School Committee, teachers, and the children of each class in the school. Native shrubs and trees were also added to the native section. Trees were given by Messrs A. G. Bryant and B. Jones, the remainder being purchased from a fund handed over to the school by the Diamond Jubilee Committee.
