SOUTH CANTERBURY’S SHIELD CHALLENGE
To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald ” Sir, —The Ranfurly Shield match Otago v. South Canterbury is only a little over two weeks away and Timaru in its usual style is making great efforts to give our team the moral support it should get. I don’t think! Now come on, wake up Timaru. Let us show that we are just as alive as Invercargill, and make this year a great effort. It is hot so long ago since we had a Winter Show here, and what was the reason for the success of the Show —the closing of the country towns to allow the people to come to Timaru. So now Timaru can show the people of South Canterbury that it is with its team this year one and all.—l am, etc., tiMaru. Timaru, August 7. To the Editor of "The Timaru Herald” Sir, —Is it correct that the South Canterbury Rugby Union has issued a challenge in connection with the Ranfurly Shield, which is now held by Otago? There is a rumour current in town that this is so, and if Dame Rumour is correct, why all the secrecy? One week-end there was an invasion of Southlanders, complete with all their bands to cheer their representatives to victory. Cannot South Canterbury take a leaf out fo Southland’s book and do likewise? Surely there are enough Rugby enthusiasts in South Canterbury to organise a similar invasion to the southern City. It is to be hoped that the leaders of Rugby in this district will leave nc stone unturned to ensure that the public of South Canterbury will have a reasonable opportunity of being able to cheer their team to victory.—l am, etc., WAKE UP TIMARU. Timaru, August 7.
