TRAIN FOR SHIELD MATCH

DECISION OF RUGBY UNION ARRANGEMENTS FOR TOUR Star were declared winners of the Skinner Cup and Old Boys the winners of the third grade competition at a meeting of the management committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union last night. Present—Messrs A. G. Knowles (chairman), D. Hepburn, J. H. Pennycook, A. B. Rowlands, J. M. Ritchie, O. S. Priest, M. J. Angland, S. H. Sullivan, C. L. Cutler, A. B. Herdman and C. W. Keinan. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Rowlands, that the Union congratulate the w’inners. Messrs Rowlands and Priest were appointed the respective managers of the South Canterbury senior and junior representative teams against North Otago at Timaru on Saturday. The New Zealand Union wrote stating that the charges for the match New Zealand v. South Canterbury at Timaru on September 9 should be not less than 16, stand 3/6, including tax (reserves 6d extra), and school children 6d to the ground only. Reporting on the visit of Mr Rowlands and he to the meeting of the committee of the Waimate Sub-Union, Mr Keinan said that any difficulties that had been apparent had been amicably settled. Waimate expressed a hope that there would be a little more co-operation by South Canterbury in some respects. There was very little in the talk about Waimate linking up with the North Otago Union, ar d in his opinion Waimate were sorry that the move had ever been suggested. The air was cleared considerably as a result of the discussion. Messrs Keinan and Rowlands were thanked for their attendance and report. Shield Match Arrangements The stationmaster (Mr C. J. Williams) wrote advising that providing the South Canterbury-Otago representative match was a Ranfurly Shield fixture, a special train would be run from Timaru on August 26, the fare being 10/6. The secretary (Mr F. J. Cook) explained that if desired the train would proceed to Orari and Temuka to pick up passengers. Mr Hepburn moved that a train be run, the motion being unanimously carried. Mr Angland was appointed manager of the team for the southern tour, it being agreed that Mr Sullivan accompany the team as coach. It was decided that 20 players make the trip, and that the names be announced after the North Otago match. A grant of £3/3/- was made towards the expenses of the Timaru Highland Pipe Band who, it was said, would probably make the trip, and it was decided to ask the Otago Union to make the Band the guests of the southern union. On the motion of Mr Rowlands, it was agreed to ask Otago to submit the names of referees available for the Shield match.
