NUMBER IN CHRISTCHURCH GROWING By Teleerapu Pies: association CHRISTCHURCH, July 27. The Mayor of C.iristchurch (Mr J. W. Beanland) said to-day, in addressing a meeting of the Garden Allotments Committee, an organisation for helping unemployed men to grow vegetables, that there were more unemployed men in Christchurch to-day than there were a year ago. The committee had hoped that there would be no further need fo. its activities, but in view of the position as revealed by the unemployment figures, he thought that the committee would have to carry on. Mr W. W. Scarff said that from the figures it appeared that Christchurch was 300 worse off than at this time last year. Mr Beanland said various local bodies, including the City Council, had materially curtailed the number of men employed on relief work. There seemed to be more men on sustenance than ever before. He was not sure of the exact facts, but there had been an apparent increase during the last two or three months. Mr M. J. Barnett, director of Parks and Reserves!! said the number of men applying for free firewood was more than double that of any previous year.
