SOCIAL NOTES

Dr and Mrs Stubbs, Oamaru, are guests at the Dominion.

Mr and Mrs G. Ferris, Christchurch, are staying at the Grosvenor. Mrs A. Read and Miss Read, Ashburton, are guests at the Empire. Mr and Mrs S. D. Cox, Christchurch, are guests at the Grand.

Mrs F. Drewitt, is at present on a visit to Wellington. Mr and Mrs J. H. Grigg, Longbeach, are visitors to Wellington for the races.

Mrs A. H. McC. Acheson, Waimate, who has been on a visit to Christchurch, returned home yesterday.

Miss Turnbull is the guest of Miss Elworthy, Pareora Cottage, LeCren’s Terrace.

Mrs James Grant, Gray’s Hills, who is visiting Christchurch, will return home on Saturday accompanied by Mrs John Guthrie, who will be her guest.

The Misses Sheila and Jean Macpherson and Miss Olive Graham, Portsmouth, England, are at present on a caravan tour through New Zealand.

Mr and Mrs Percy Elworthy, Gordon’s Valley, who are at present in England, will leave by the Rangitane on July 23 on their return journey to New Zealand.

The engagement is announced of Miss Mary Inman, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs E. W. Inman, Cattle Valley, to Mr Sydney Quartley, Palmerston North, only son of Mr and Mrs A. G. Quartley, Auckland. The marriage will take place in August. Dr and Mrs Alan Tennent of Wellington are leaving on July 23 for Honolulu where Dr Tennent will attend the Pan-Pacific conference to which medical men are invited from all countries bordering on the Pacific. Dr Tennent is a son of Mr and Mrs R. C. Tennent formerly well known in Timaru.

Miss Louise Isabelle Dyer, daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Dyer, of Tinakofl Road, Wellington, sprang a happy surprise on he- many friends by announcing her engagement to Mr Alexander Mclntosh, of Bombay and England. The marriage will take place this month and Mr Mclntosh and his bride will leave soon after the wedding for England and will spend three months at Home before returning to Bombay, where their home will be.
