BASKETBALL

TEMUKA COMPETITION THREE UNBEATEN TEAMS Easy wins were securing in the two first grade games played in the Temuka Basketball Sub-Association’s competitions on Saturday last. Temuka Young Women, last year’s winners, are holding their place at the head of the first grade table and they decisively defeated H.5.0.G., indicating that they will be hard to beat again this season. Pleasant Point were the other successful team on Saturday, when they beat Winchester, who are new to first grade play, by 20 goals. A feature of the competitions so far is the large number of goals scored by the two Pleasant Point teams. The third grade side, which appears to be the strongest team in its grade, has 98 points in its favour and only 38 against it while the first grade team has scored 84 and had 55 points scored against it. The success of the new Orari Bridge team is rather remarkable. This is the first year that there has been a club in that district and the new side is second in the third grade competition, having lost only one of the four games it has played. With Geraldine’s two teams occupying a prominent position in the same competition and the Geraldine second grade side being fourth in its competition, the prospects for forming a strong sub-association for Geraldine are bright. Efforts are being made to form clubs at Hilton and Orari. Once again the Temuka High School team is in the running for championship honours in the second grade. Although there are many new players in the nine, the team is playing good basketball, due largely to the efficient coaching of Mrs L. S. Palmer, a former South Canterbury representative. The championship tables, after the fourth series of games, reads:— First Grade
