HOSPITAL COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN RESIGNS After serving on the Waimate Hospital Committee for a period of 10 years, the last four of which he has been chairman, Mr John I. Hayman has handed in his resignation. This step was taken by Mr Hayman at the last meeting of the committee for business reasons. The resignation was accepted with regret and a resolution was passed placing on record the committee’s high appreciation of the services rendered to the hospital by Mr Hayman during his terms as a committee member and as chairman. Mr Hayman was elected to the committee as a Waimate County representative, and the vacancy will be filled by the Waimate County Council by appointment. In the meantime, Mr Alan Grant is acting-chairman. SAVAGE CLUB The Waimate Savage Club's second korero of the season was held on Tuesday evening. Great Chief Watters installed Brave N. L. Kjiell as Great Chief for the evening. The following items were given: Selections, the orchestra under Savage Manchester; songs, Savages Borthwick, Crawford and L. O’Donoghue; pianoforte solo, Savage S. Griffin; cornet solo, Savage T. Ottley. An address on newspaper production was given by Savage E. W. Murphy. COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL

Arrangements are in hand for tendering a complimentary social in Waimate to Mr John Bitchener in recognition of his services to the Waitaki electorate as Member of Parliament for some 16 years and as Minister of Pub-

lie Works in the Coalition Government. The function will’be held during the Parliamentary recess early in July, when the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, Leader of the Opposition, has given an assurance that he will be able to attend. It is likely also that the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates and the Hon. Adam Hamilton will also be present. It is proposed to present Mr Bitchener with an illuminated address. SHIELD ON DISPLAY For the second time within the course of two years, the President’s Shield, held for one year by the winners of the annual Dominion basketball tournament, is on display in Waimate. At the 1935 tournament held in Wellington, the South Canterbury team, in which the Waimate Association was represented, tied with Southland for first place and the shield is held jointly by these two teams during the present year. The Southland Association had charge of the trophy for t”e first six months of 1936 and have now forwarded it to the South Canterbury district. It will be on display in a Waimate shop window for about a month before being forwarded to otl er South Canterbury centres. At the 1933 tournament South Canterbury tied with two other districts and the shield came to Waimate for a few weeks of the four months during which it was in the possession of the South Canterbury Association. FOOTBALL REFEREES The following referees and touch judges have been appointed for next Saturday’s matches by the Referees’ Association:— Senior: Southern v. Old Boys, No. 2 ground, referee, Mr S. Fleming; line judges, Messrs L. Betten and L. Smith. Huimai v. Glenavy, at Glenavy; referee, Mr J. V. Riach; line judges, Messrs F. Bailey and Glenavy representatives. Juniors: Old Boys v. Huimai, No. 2 ground; referee, Mr E. Ives; line judges, Messrs N. Anderson and Huimai representative. Southern v. Pirates; referee, Mr D. Hertnon; line judges, Mr E. Morrison and Pirates’ representative. Makikihi v. High School at Makikihi; referee, Mr W. Wyndham; line judges, High School and Makikihi representatives. DOUGLAS CREDIT RALLY About 100 Social Credit students are expected to attend a rally to be held in Waimate during the week-end of June 21. It is anticipated that members of associations in Christchurch, Oamr.ru and Dunedin will be present. NEW GRAVEL PIT The Waimate Borough Council has opened up a new gravel pit in cne of its reserves to provide suitable material for work on footpaths. Prevlcvly, shingle was taken from the river bed, but this contained man}' weeds, particularly gorse and broom, which began to grow after being placed on the footpaths, giving them an untidy appearance and occasioning w for th- staff. Further, the metal from

the new pit consolidates more easily and will yield a good surface in a short period. PERSONAL Before leaving Waimate to take up residence in Ashburton Mrs E. H. Wilson was farewelled by a number of friends who made her a small presentation at her home. Among those present were: Mesdames C. Thomas, Hay, R. Frost, J. Creba, W. Hosking, J. Dench, J. Clark, F. Taylor, H. Nicholas, T. Giles, W.'Chamberlain, J. H. Hosking anl Miss K. Fox. Procters, the Premier Opticians.
