WOMENS INSTITUTES

BLUECLIFFS At the monthly meeting of the Bluecliffs Women's Institute Mrs Cocks presided over a large attendance cf members. It was decided that every member who uses the Institute library be asked to give another book this year. A vote of thanks was proposed to those members who had designed and worked the Institute banner. The monthly three minute talk was given by Mrs Speechly, who spoke on “The Settlers of Waikouaiti.” A very detailed report of the annual meeting in Geraldine was read by Mrs Collins, one of the delegates, who was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs Woodhouse gave a very interesting talk on her expedition with the Maoris to an old Maori Settlement at the mouth of the Waitaki. She brought with her some chips of flint and Moa bones, also some snaps of the party. The competitions resulted. — Wool tea cosy: Miss J. Beattie 1, Miss B. Morris 2, Miss J. Beattie 3. Marble cake: Miss B. Morris 1. Mrs Collins 2. Premier bloom: Mrs Cocks. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Speechly, Mrs Squire and Miss Sumpter. ARUNDEL Mrs Wooding presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Arundel Women's Institute. An invitation was received from the Woodbury Institute for two members and escorts to attend its birthday party. The secretary read a letter from Miss O. Barker, who, on behalf of her mother, sister and herself thanked the Institute for the present that had been given them on their departure from the district. A vote of thanks was passed to Misses D. Johnston and H. Pithie for printing the programes. Mrs Pithie gave a very interesting talk on the half-yearly federation meeting held in Geraldine and was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs Lewis proposed a vote of thanks to those who had helped with the Institute “bay” in Geraldine. Mrs Wooding announced that a meeting was to be held in Geraldine on May 13 In connection with the winter show in Timaru. Mrs Black was elected to represent the Institute at the meeting. It was decided not to send a delegate to the annual conference in Dunedin as the Institute’s funds were low. Afternoon tea was served by the hosMiss F. McGuigan (Ealing) gave an interesting demonstration of smocking and was accorded a vote of thanks. . The competitions resulted. —Bowl of chrysanthemums: Miss J. Galletly 1, Mrs N. Brown 2. Best beet-root: Mrs N. Brown 1, Miss E. McCully 2. Best bloom: Miss J. Galletly 1. A mistake was made in one of last months competitions and the best programme for 1936-37 which had been announced as won by. Mrs Brown was won by Miss E. McComb.
