TEMUKA

FARMING INTERESTS JOINT COMMITTEE FAVOURED Proposals for the consolidation of farming interests in South Canterbury, by the establishment of a standing committee of representatives of Agricultural and Pastoral Associations, the Farmers' Union, the Crown Tenants' Association and the Canterbury Sheep Owners’ Union, were submitted by the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association to the Temuka Association, at its meeting on Tuesday. The letter stated that it was considered that closer co-operation between the various bodies was desirable. Any such scheme, to be useful and practicable, would have to provide for the farming industry, through the representatives from the various organisations, to speak with one voice. Such a scheme was attainable in South Canterbury by the formation of a standing committee comprising the presidents of the Timaru, Waimate, Mackenze, Temuka and Geraldine A. and P. Associations, the president and vice-president of the Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, the chairman and vice-chairman of the Crown Tenants’ Association and the president of the Sheep Owners’ Union. The joint committee would be convened only when any question of grave importance to the farming industry arose and when united action was- desirable. If the various organisations agreed to the setting up of the committee, representatives could meet and prepare conditions for submission to the organisations participating. When the conditions had been agreed upon the standing committee could be considered and constituted. The Farmers’ Union, Crown Tenants’ Association and Sheep Owners’ Union had agreed to the proposals but the agricultural and pastoral associations had not replied and the sponsors of the scheme wished to know what the Temuka and Geraldine Association thought, and if it had any suggestions to make. Mr A. Bisdee said that the scheme really meant the amalgamation of the farmers’ organisations for the purpose of discussing any really Important matter affecting the industry. Mr R. Maddren said he thought it was an excellent idea, as the farmers would be united when any action was to be taken. The weight of numbers would tell. Other members expressed similar views and it ’was agreed, on the motion of Messrs Bisdee and A. Bain, to support the proposal.
