ATHLETICS

CANTERBURY TITLES SOME KEEN CONTESTS CHRISTCHURCH, February 22. The Canterbury amateur athletic championships, at which a South Canterbury team competed, were held in fine weather to-day. The distance-running rivalry between V. P. Boot, formerly of Timaru. the brilliant long-striding youth, who created a British Empire schoolboys’ record for the mile when a student at the Timaru Boys’ High School, and C. H. Matthews, who first sprang into prominence by winning the mile at the Christchurch technical High School sports in better time than most New Zealand championships, was advanced a further stage at the Canterbury championships last evening. Boot, who now runs for University, defeated his rival in the mile championship in the wonderful time of 4min. 26 2-ssec., on a track from which water was oozing continually. His performance was twofifths of a second better than his Empire record as a schoolboy, which he established on a firm, dry track on the Timaru Rectory ground on October 28, 1933, and his run suggested that he is capable of doing the distance in even less than 4min. 20sec. on a dry track under good conditions. Even so he must be considered a strong aspirant to the national title at Dunedin next week. The heavy track and cold atmosphere hindered Matthews, who is essentially a fine-weather and fasttrack runner. He made a hot pace all the way tp the last bend; then Boot came out from his position a yard or two behind and, with a powerful sprint, passed him with ease. Matthews did not try to go with Boot. He obviously had his mind on the three miles today and was unwilling to take up the cudgels at the finish. It is questionable to whom the race would have gone had he not given it up.
