BOROUGH RATES THE BULK RECEIVED From noon on Saturday the 10 per cent, penalty on rates due to the Temuka Borough Council for 1935-36 became operative, and it is interesting to note that of the £4,076 struck for the year £3,542 was paid. Although the amount paid before the imposition of the penalty was £55 higher than last year”s figures (£3.487) the percentage paid (87.5) was actually slightly lower, last year’s figures being 87.8 per cent. The amount paid !n during February totalled £1.355 in comparison with £1,567 for 1934-35, another indication of improving times. SWIMMING The first annual swimming sports of the Arowhenua Native School, for Herbert Smith Trust cups, were conducted on Saturday morning, the trophies being awarded to the most proficient pupils in the water. The winners were Naomi Wixon (girls) and Mana Mihaka (boys) and after the sports they were congratulated by the chairman of the School Committee (Mr P. Thompson 26. Totals: Temuka 174, Ashburton 153. VISITING PICNICS The Timaru Congregational and Salvation Army Sunday Schools held their annual picnics on the Domain on Saturday. Each picnic numbered about 100, the Congregational party arriving during the morning and the other visitors after lunch. In charge of the Congregational party were the Rev. J. Milburn Stewart, Mr W. E. Tubb, chairman of the picnic committee, and Mr L. Bowden, secretary. It was the fourth occasion that the picnic had visited Temuka, and Mr Tubb said that they had not met with such hospitality anywhere as at Temuka. Adjutant W. Knight, formerly officer in charge of the Temuka Corps, and Sergeant Major W. Hawkey were in charge of the Salvation Army picnic. A lengthy sports programme was held and during the afternoon the Army Band played selections. MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS The annual meeting of householders of the Arowhenua Native School district was held recently at the Maori Hall, Mr L. Hopkinson presiding. The most successful school year for some time was shown in the annual report, which stated that the pupils had gained distinction in both examinations and sport. Seven pupils, all those who entered, gained proficiency certificates, Powhiri and Te Aute Wixon won Government scholarships entitling them to free education at the Hukarere Maori Giris’ College, Napier. The school again secured one of the Education Board’s merit certificates for environment and won the Board’s carrot-growing competition. It was also third in the Hurdley Shield competition. The basketball team won the country section at the South Canterbury schools’ tournament and was runner-up in the senior section at Temuka, while the folk-dancing team was successful in the schools’ section of the Federation of Women’s Institutes’ festival. The election resulted: Chairman. Mr P. Paipeta; secretary, Mr L. Hopkinson; committee, Mesdames W. Mihaka, B. Solomon and S. Painter. TENNIS Playing on the St. Peter’s courts on Saturday, the home team defeated St. Joseph’s in a friendly match by 14 sets to 8. Scores (St. Peter’s names first)— Women’s singles: Miss W. GENERAL Members of the Bowling Club on Saturday afternoon engaged the Temuka Ladies’ Club in friendly rink games. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs H. B. Strange, wife of the president, and. during the afternoon Mr Strange expressed the club's pleasure at being able to hold the fixture. He thanked the ladies for attending and announced that the return function would be held shortly. After the sports on Saturday, the Temuka Athletic Club held a dance in the Drill Hall. Many of the competitors stayed for the function, which was most successful. Music was supplied by a local orchestra and Mr G. A. Washington was the M.C.
