A cable message received from Sydney last night stated that Dr. Herbert Robert Seddon, Director of the Glenfiield Veterinary Research Research Station since 1923. has been appointed Professor of Veterinary Science at Brisbane University. He will also undertake work in the stock branch. Dr. Seddon was born at Tauranga and educated at Auckland Grammar School. An official wireless message from Rugby reports that the King has approved the appointment of Commander the Honourable Archibald Douglas Cochrane to succeed Sir Hugh Stephenson as Governor of Burma. Commander Cochrane retired from the Royal Navy in 1922. The appointment w r ill make necessary a by-election for Dumbartonshire, which he has represented since 1932. “The late King took a great interest in anything pertaining to the Scottish nation and endeavoured always to foster the traditions of that country,” said the president of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society (Mr A. M. Kilgour) at a meeting of directors last night. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect and sympathy was expressed with members of the Royal Family. The great loss the South Canterbury Caledonian Society had suffered by the death of Mr J. A. Hay, was mentioned at last night’s meeting of directors by the president (Mr A. M. Kilgour), who said that Mr Hay had been a director for many years and had given yeoman service. In addition to his work as a director Mr Hay had given valuable assistance in connection with the grounds and he would be greatly missed. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried.
