SOUTH CANTERBURY CENTRE DATES FOR HARBOUR RACES Arrangements for the South Canterbury Swimming Centre’s annual Speechly Mile race and the 440 yards harbour race were made at the monthly meeting of the Centre last evening. Present—Messrs H. H. Fraser (presiding), Mackay, W. Drummond, S. Crerar, J. C. Hayhurst, S. Hollander, T. Elder, A. C. Rippin and W. Sutherland, Mesdames A. Morrison and K. Mayo. The president reported that since the last meeting the executive had met on several occasions. Programmes for the Temuka, Waimate and West End carnivals and lists of officials had been received and approved. At the National Junior and Intermediate championships at Hamilton Miss N. Manning and M. Shanahan had acquitted themselves well. The Otago Centre had offered the services of Mr D. Thomson, their team manager, to manage the South Canterbury swimmers and the offer had been gratefully accepted. Several club carnivals had been held lately and had proved most successful. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to the Otago Centre in appreciation of the offer of Mr Thomson’s services. In view of the fact that there were several club carnivals still to be held and that the tide would be favourable, it was agreed to hold the 440 yards harbour race on Monday next at 7 p.m. The Speechly Mlle was set down for Saturday, March 7 at 3 p.m., and the North End Club was allocated February 22 for Its carnival. Remits for the annual conference of centres, which will be held in conjunction with the New Zealand championships at Dunedin, were received and considered. It was decided that the Centre be represented at the championships by K. Moffatt, who will take part in the diving. The local officer (Mr Hayhurst) reported on recent inter-club carnivals and the progress of the new system of checking up defaulters in the payment of entry fees. On the suggestion of Mr Hollander, It was agreed to hold a meeting of diving Judges on Monday evening to discuss problems, and assist in further developing uniformity.
