DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL A meeting of the Committee of the Fairlie District High School was held on Monday, Mr H. Carlton presiding. Before commencing business, the chairman referred to the death of His Majesty King George V, and members stood in silence in respect to his memory. Mr D. Barnes, M.P., wrote congratulating the staff on the fine performance of the scholars at the school concert. The headmaster, Mr Hayman, reported as follows: “School re-opened with a roll number of 183 in the Primary Department and 25 in the secondary Department. A number of five-year-olds were admitted. Miss M. C. Dale has been appointed to the sole charge school of Craigmore. We record her leaving with regret. Mr C. W. Reid has been reappointed as a substituted assistant. At the end of the year the results of examinations, etc., were:— Training College Entrance, 2 sat, 1 passed, 1 gained a partial pass. Both were accepted at the Christchurch Training College. Matriculation. Three sat, 2 passed. Senior Free Place. All were recommended who were eligible and were granted their intermediate certificates without exammation. St. Kevin's scholarship. One sat and gained a scholarship tenable for three years at St. Kevin’s College, Oamaru. Proficiency, 21 sat, 19 gained proficiency certificates, 2 competency certificates. School sports were held on Thursday, December 12, and an enjoyable afternoon was spent on the Athletic Grounds. The gross takings of the concert were £2l/18/-. Costumes for the secondary schoom amounted to 22/-. of which the girls contributed 13/6. The home gardens competition and the Calf Club competition organised in the primary department were very successful. I would be grateful if some arrangements for filling in and grading the grounds could be made.” Mr Carlton said he wished to congratulate the headmaster and staff, the percentage of passes being very good. The secondary school did exceptionally well in having two to matriculate out of three. Regarding the headmaster’s residence, it was decided that the Board be written to and asked to have the school house grounds put in order. It was decided that the annual school excursion to Caroline Bay be held on Thursday, February 20. The chairman and secretary are to make the usual arrangements. Messrs Fraser and Carlton were appointed visitors for the ensuing month.
