LAWN TENNIS

NOTES ON THE GAME (By "Set AW) The South Canterbury ranking lists are:— Men Women A. C. Barr Miss N. Sullivan N. T. Satterthwaite Mrs R. Lewis A. E. Sandrel Miss M. Callaghan M. Souter Miss D. Shirtcliff G. C. Reid Mrs Cotter I. Mathieson Miss B. Sutherland F. G. Lewis Miss J. Eaton J. S. Satterthwaite Miss D. Patchett R. T. Shells Mrs A. E. Sandrel C. Durning Miss M. Jefferson J. Taylor Miss D. Andrews M. E. Crowley J. Milliken In the women’s ranking list it seems likely that Miss Sullivan will be removed, as she has not been able to play any serious tennis this year. Miss D. Smythe will probably be placed close to the top. and on her present form should very nearly secure No. 1 position. There has been some activity on the men’s ranking list. J. Milliken (chal-

lenger) lost to M. E. Crowley 6-3, 6-3. R. T. Shells defeated C. Durning 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. M. Souter defeated G. C. Reid 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. In this game, which was featured by a number of long drive rallies, Souter- further showed his improvement in form by defeating a player who is capable of mixing his returns. In each game that Souter plays his backhand improves, and he will trouble his opponents in representative matches. J. Taylor (challenger) defeated M. E. Crowley 4-6, 6-3, 8-6. This was a long drawn out game, with very little difference between either player. Taylor is driving well on his forehand at present, and his service Is always well placed, while his backhand has improved considerably. Crowley had several match points in the third set. I. Mathieson retained his place at No. 6 on the ladder by successfully defending a challenge from his club mate, F. G. Lewis, 6-3, 6-2.

The representative team for the season will probably not alter from the first six men at present on the ranking list. They make a good even team, and should give a good account of themselves against North Otago on asphalt courts. Against Otago, on the grass, there should be a closer contest, although it is doubtful whether the South Canterbury side could repeat the performance of two years ago, when the Southerners were defeated by 18 matches to 6. A round of B grade matches will be played on Saturday, and a match of interest will be that between Tlmaru and Aorangl. In the last four years Aorangl has had successive wins against Timaru, and the only win registered by the Timaru team against Aorangi in the B grade was that won three seasons ago from the Aorangi B team. On this season's form, however, Timaru should emerge the victors of Saturday’s contest. Geraldino and Wai-iti will have an interesting match, and the honours should be fairly evenly divided at the end of the day’s play. Baptist on form should defeat Wai-iti 2; nevertheless Wai-iti players should do well. In the Australian national championships just completed, the chief event has been the defeat of J. H. Crawford by A. K. Quist. The writing has been on the wall for some time so far as Crawford is concerned, and Quist, having defeated Crawford previously in the New South Wales Championships, is definitely No. 1 player in Australia to-day, but the question the Australians should ask is: "Can Quist rise to the heights of a champion on the centre court at Wimbledon?” It is doubtful whether he will get past the last eight in this year’s contest. Earlier in the year Miss T. Coyne defeated Miss Joan Hartigan, New South Wales champion after the Australian champion’s return from abroad. This time, however. Miss Coyne went out in the quarter-finals, and Miss Hartigan retained her title at the expense of another young player in Miss N. Winn, of Australia. Miss T. Coyne gained her first national title in the women’s doubles with Miss Winn, and these two young players will be a definite acquisition to Australian tennis for a few years to come. * • * • It Is pleasing to see the success of Malfroy and Stedman in winning the German covered courts championship. This title in the past has seldom gone to other than German and French players. W. E. Renton is likely to be back in Timaru in time for the Canterbury, representative match on March 14. MEETING OF ASSOCIATION The rearrangement of grade competition matches was decided on last night at a meeting of the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. Mr R. A. Holdgate presided; also present were Messrs S. Sullivan, P. W. Young, W. M. Sexton, J. S. Satterthwaite and J. Milliken. Apologies were received from M. and E. Sandral. The secretary reported that Cochet and his professional team of players could not play in Timaru on a Saturday. A week day would not suit‘local conditions and there would therefore be no match. It was decided to take steps in the near future to further proceed with the enlistment of the support of other associations for the holding of the New Zealand championships at Timaru next year. Dates for matches are as follow: February I—B grade at Maori Park. February B—A grade matches and B grade match versus Geraldine at Geraldine. February 15—Representative match V.
