OBITUARY

DR. D. D. DRYDEN Dr. Douglas Dixon Dryden, whose death is announced, was respected by all sections of the community for his geniality and sympathetic understanding. He was the first medical practitioner at Fairlie, where he took up residence in 1892. Seven years later he came to Timaru, where he practised up to the time of his death. A staunch churchman, he was for many years connected with St. Mary’s Church, while, in an unostentatious manner, he performed much good work for the poor. Dr. Dryden’s first association with New Zealand was rather unusual, for he landed here many years ago and saw the first English football team playing against the Maoris, and the following year, he captained the same English side in the Old Country. He was perhaps more widely known in sporting activities, being in his day, a very keen footballer while he was also very interested m shooting, fishing, bowling and other sports. After ceasing participation in the more strenuous sports, Dr. Dryden associated himself with the administrative side, for some time being a member of the Timaru Bowling Centre. In his native land he was a keen follower of the hounds. Dr. Dryden* was born at Plymouth. Devonshire, and was an old Blundell School boy. He graduated at Home. He is survived by Mrs Dryden. MR P. D. SINCLAIR Mr Philip David Sinclair, who died at Pareora on Wednesday, was well and favourably known in the district. Mr Sinclair, who served at the war, carried on business as a general storekeeper. He took a keen interest in all forms of sport, and for several years was captain of the Pareora Cricket Club. He was also a member of the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Cricket Association. He was also an enthusiastic angler. All movements for the benefit of the district had his keen support, and the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to Mrs Sinclair.
